Lectures: 1 hour lectures with slides.  All lectures include: slides, actual samples, and time for questions

  Bead Creative Art Quilts

Nancy will chronicle the steps and multi-year process of creating, designing and publishing her book Bead Creative Art Quilts. Follow her as she collaborates with 6 international quilt artists adding her new textual beading discoveries to their diverse art quilts.  Let the foremost authority on fabric beading show you how to create incredible works of art. Your preconceived notions about beads on art quilts will be blown away as you view quilt masterpieces on which hand beading is a primary design element.  This lecture will delight the eye, and inspire the hands!

New Beading Techniques from Needle Art Inspirations

Nancy challenges the notion that beads can add only mere “sparkle” to needlework.  Instead she explores, invents, and employees beading processes that serve as primary design elements on her textile art.  As a self proclaimed “Certified Beadaholic” she tends to view the world through “beady eyes”.

Frequently drawing upon our global needlework heritage when developing and creating her original art, Nancy asks the question “What would that particular needle art technique look like as a beading process?”  Through endless experimentation she has transformed Japanese Sashiko, Victorian Crazy Quilt stitches, Native American beading stitches, Needlepoint, and Embroidery into new innovative beading processes.

  Beads Make the Quilt

Beads can add color, texture, sparkle and interest to quilts. Beads can also transcend their customary role of mere embellishment and become a primary element of the quilt design. Expand your understanding of fabric beading as you explore a plenitude of possibilities by numerous well known and lesser-known art quilters who explore diverse beading/fabric techniques and subject matter.

  European Influences on Contemporary Quilts

Slide presentation of Nancy’s experiences attending the Patchwork and Quilt Expo held April 2000 in Strasbourg France.   The emphasis will be on European contemporary quilts included in several Expo exhibits, contrasting them to American contemporary quilts.  The following topics will be included: Europe's quilting heritage, wide spread use of "non-cotton" quilting fabrics, three dimensional aspects,   unique size and  format variations, and choice of visual imagery.   Chocked full of inspiration and ideas to use in your future textile art/quilt making projects.

Beady Eyed Visionaries, Expressive Beadwork Artists

In-depth study of 5 contemporary beadwork artists who use diverse non-fabric beadwork techniques to express their view of self and society.  Learn how they work, what draws them to beads, and their artistic struggles in this emerging art form.  A great lecture for those who want an insight into the infinite possibilities of exploring with beads. Research made possible through a grant Nancy received from The Minnesota Center for Art Education.

  Antique Beaded Bags

Antique beaded bags are popular with collectors of art, antiques, and beadwork. Explore the history of beaded bags circa 1820’s-1950’s. A collection of 50+ beaded bags will be documented with slides and research information. You will accumulate clues in identifying the date of these beaded treasures as you examine the progression of bag styles; patterns, motifs, frames, and the diverse beading techniques employed in the construction process.
