Genes: Test Tube or Cauldron? $2,000.00 Designer Genes speaks of my awe and respect for scientific discoveries, as well as my fears. With scientific advancements come ethical questions. Questions such as: Cloning, burden or blessing?, Who chooses the recipients of medical advancements?, Who should pay for this technology?, and Should patients have the right to chose die? This piece started as an experiment of constructing a peyote tube and the protruding texture at the same time. The tube evolved in to DNA due to my life circumstances during the creative process. |

American Beauty 15h x 11w x 11d Cotton fabric, lace, silk flower parts, numerous found objects. Traditional and new bead embroidery techniques. $3,000 American Beauty, a merry widow garment, features on the outside the "ideal" image of feminine beauty and womanhood in American culture as promoted through the media, advertisement, and the fashion industries. The five colorfully seductive vignettes feature these media images: Thin is In, Beauty Is Only Skin Deep, Barbie, Wonder Bra, and Miss America. Each vignette uses attached objects, images and beadwork which draw attention to these cultural icons. The garment opens to view a fashion model, head down with a skeleton hanging from her neck, as she walks over broken mirrors. Beaded words speak of the results of trying to live up to these unattainable ideals: anorexia, bulimia, depression, unnecessary surgery, and death. 50 sharks' teeth are beaded inward toward the wearers body symbolizing the pain and suffering of having a negative self-image when one strives for unrealistic and unattainable goals. |

We all remember Jackie O. as a person who loved art and history, viewed as refined and gracious, eternally living in "Camelot". What of the private Jackie we chose not to see? Her knowledge of her presidential husbands numerous extramarital affairs, her lust for expensive clothing? What if she just once publicly "let down her hair" and met her antithesis Timothy Leary for lunch? What would she wear? |

The Garden of Beadin $6,000.00 Variations of the single needle right angle weave. Lured in by the lush color, texture, and sparkle of seed beads I quickly succumbed to the insidious disease of "Beadaholism". As creating labor intensive bead sculpture becomes the focus of my energies, I lose my life balance and become consumed by my fascination of beads. Witness my leg and hair protruding from the mouth of the beaded Venus Fly Trap! |
